SEBASTOPOL 18

The jury's still out on whether I'm alive. If the many-worlds interpretation of quantum physics is true, there exists an alternate world where I am dead that is no less real than the one I am experiencing. The mind-body problem has been tripping my shit out. At least in this Quantum State (sequel to Garden State?) I live to mix another Sebastopol Mixtape. Featured are new tunes from Tan Dollar, Atlas Sound, and Stay Cool Forever, along with choice cuts of garage rock from Auckland, NZ circa 1966.

THE SEBASTOPOL MIXTAPE, vol. 17

Hey everybody. Here at the beginning of November it is but the waning days of Fall, and so naturally in Southern California it's going to be 95 degrees today. I've had my head simultaneously abroad and in the past these past few months, and this mixtape reflects that more than any I've made yet. Chill out to funky sounds from around the world in the late 60's/70's with cuts from the Nigeria Special series, activist Bossa Nova from Brazil, and the Politicians from the good ol' U-S-of-Blaxploitation. Also, new music from Beach Fossils, Dominant Legs, and Mini Mansions and the sorely-missed Olivia Tremor Control covering the Beach Boys' "Roll Plymouth Rock."

    The SEBASTOPOL MIXTAPE, vol. 14

This month is another healthy dose of rough-around-the-edges guitar music care of the Bitters' killer debut LP and Las Robertas out of Costa Rica. Karl Blau's "Spin Around" is a shifty snake of a tune that makes excellent use of a reverb-drenched and reversed trumpet which may sound a little out of place coming after the Nation of Ulysses' old-school DC hardcore classic "Today I Met the Girl I'm Going to Marry." Also: more Old Music From Around the World with Yuzo Kayama and his mean Japanese surf guitar, as well as Kim Sun's otherworldly "The Man Who Must Leave."

It has the alternate single-version of the Velvets' "All Tomorrow's Parties," as well as B-sides and rarities from the Wedding Present, the Feelies, and Sun City Girls. THE SEBASTOPOL MIXTAPE Vol. 11

It's been an awesome few weeks with the ride-or-die homies in town from the great white East, but with a level of real-world physical activity that precluded a lot of music snobbery. That said, the ol' stereo's been spinning a pretty eclectic mix of records lately, notably the predictably excellent Winter Review 2009 comp from the fine people over at Underwater Peoples, when I wasn't busy jamming the new Spoon record or, god help me, that Cap'n Jazz retrospective.

Also of note this week: the UK's Chalices of the Past give LCD's "Someone Great" the spacy 8-bit treatment, with surprisingly satisfying results.

    1 - Run DMT - Baby [Bong Voyage, 2009]
2 - The Sandwitches - Tarantula Arms [How to Make Ambient Sadcake, 2009]
3 - The Books - All Bad Ends All [Thought for Food, 2002]
    4 - A Faulty Chromosome - Paris [Daytrotter Session - 4-12-2009, 2009]
5 - Atlas Sound - Criminals (Electronic) [Rough Trade EP, 2009]
6 - The Walkmen - Subterranean Homesick Blues ['Pussy Cats' Starring The Walkmen, 2006]
    7 - Sic Alps - Clarence [Skulls Without Borders 10'', 2009]
8 - Spoon - Who Makes Your Money [Transference, 2010]
    9 - Cap'n Jazz - Take On Me [Analphabetapolothology, 1998]
10 - Fluffy Lumbers - Adoration [Underwater Peoples Winter Review, 2009]
    11 - Toro Y Moi - 109 [Demo, 2009]
    12 - Whorl - Maybe It's Better [Maybe It's Better 7', 1992]
    13 - The Feelies - Time for a Witness [Time For a Witness, 1991]
    14 - The Thanes - Static [Evolver, 2004]
15 - Black Brick - Snail Song [Soulsongs, Lovesongs, Samesongs, 2009]
16 - Chalices of the Past - Someone Great (LCD Soundsystem) [WIZARDZZZ, 2009]

    Mixtape: Pop Music (for Guitars)

    Why all the laziness lately?

Weed mostly, but also I've been slaving away on some mixtapes, the first of which features pop music with a lot of guitars in it.

Most of it is relatively recent, with a couple of tracks reaching back to the 80's. Some may have a problem with my use of the term "pop music." Yeah, a lot of it is kinda like that stuff that people call shitgaze; some of it is a lot closer to punk; there are countless essential omissions, but basically I was trying to evoke a mood more than anything else. Check it out:

    1. Thee Oh Sees - Rainbow
    2. The Vaselines - Dying for It
    3. Yo La Tengo - Pencil Test
    4. Vivian Girls - Going Insane
