video: Washed Out (ft. Small Black) - Belong Live at SXSW

Here's a pretty cool SXSW performance captured by the homies at Yours Truly for p4k.tv featuring two of my absolute favorite artists of last year, North Carolina's Washed Out and Brooklyn's Small Black. Incidentally, I wasn't able to fucking see them play with YACHT at the fucking Echoplex because all the fucking LA people bought out all the fucking tickets.
Fuck.

Enjoy.

New Washed Out - Luck

Happy September.

Columbia, South Carolina's Ernest Greene a.k.a. Washed Out doesn't need any more blog exposure. The still-young lo-fi electro project is already one of the Summer of Glo-fi's most rewarding success-stories, and is quickly becoming one of its most prolific. The latest track to surface online, "Luck" is a woozy instrumental built on a loping hip-hop beat and fluttering, ephemeral synths out of Black Moth Super Rainbow's wilder dreams. The track appears on Greene's forthcoming Mirror Universe tape High Life, alongside the hazy nostalgia-trip of "Belong," which we recently featured as part of our summery Fuzzy Dreams mixtape.

Mixtape: Fuzzy Dreams

As we reach the tail-end of Summer, our friends go off to school once again and idea of doing so yourself becomes evermore tangible, my mind inevitably drifts, loses focus. This ephemeral period of social realignment is a weird one for me, as old friends disappear and the carefree floating of the Summer months comes to a crushing end.

Which is to say, the end of Summer sucks, and it makes me sad, and the music of the moment speaks to this aimlessness. Inevitable derision be damned, I am an unapologetic champion of this "dreamgaze/glo-fi/GvsBxcore" thing that's been going on.

Electronic music--out of nowhere, and all of a sudden--gets me. These artists are tapping into a long-faded, rainbow-tinted and oversaturated Saturday-morning-TV cultural aesthetic shared by an entire generation of lost suburban kids. These are the sounds of growing up in the early 90s, 16-bit Nintendo symphonies crashing into shimmering FM radio electro-pop; and also:skateboarding, weed, the beach, heartbreak, surfing, dreams. If--as P4k ever-so-cynically declares--it "all sounds the same," then it does so in that it taps into an archetype, an image that resonates with the overstimulated post-MTV Millennials because it's formed out of the scraps of their--our--collective experience, phased-out, half-remembered, echoing with a glimpse of all of our not-too-distant Rugrats phase.

And "Walkabout" is just a great summer jam, so yeah.

1. Phaseone - (Only) Reprise
2. Washed Out - Feel It All Around
3. Atlas Sound - Walkabout (ft. Noah Lennox)

New Music: Small Black - Despicable Dogs

The latest in a string of lo-fi dance music acts blowing up lately, Small Black may very well be the best yet.

Eschewing more explicit dancefloor jams, the Brooklyn duo go for a low-rent New Order aesthetic served well by their deft Casio arrangements and sub-Radioshack fidelity.
