When Daniel Trudeau (better known around these parts as Pregnant) took the stage at last week's Open Melody fest at UCI, I didn't know quite what to expect. Excited pre-show murmur among my friends was cautiously skeptical: The freaky/folky glitched-out brilliance found on tracks like "Uphill Divination" and "Liquidation on Swans" didn't seem to lend itself to the spartan guitar-plus-laptop setup. We had seen Panda at FYF. "I really hope this isn't wack," I said out loud.

Naturally, I was just being a huge dick as Mr. Trudeau turned in one of the most organic, crystalline-pure musical performances I've ever had the pleasure of witnessing. Having done their homework, the homies at TERROREYES capture the Pregnant live experience beautifully, emerging from this personal rabbit hole with some gorgeous footage from Pregnant HQ in Placerville, CA.

Pregnant hail from the forests of Californ-eye-ay, but t0 listen to their music you might just as easily surmise they dwell in the trees of a planet of glitch-hop sing-along forest people. Homies dropped a record last month on KDVS Recordings, and below you can hear a song from it. It's a little beat-heavy and straightforward next to the awesome Liquidation on Swans tape from last year, but that Life's Blood release hovering on the horizon looks to set those fears to rest.

Just a scant few weeks since our last edition, and sneaking in before the Holidays get here so I can work on my year-end list (oh em gee), here's volume ten of the Sebastopol Mixtape, our mix of new, old, and interesting music.



This month we're proud to feature selections from the ridiculously hard-to-track-down Pebbles: Trash Box compilation, a scuzzy 60's psych and garage rock set that's been called Nuggets' older, cooler cousin. Also featured in this edition: new music from Spoon, Hot Chip, and Toro y Moi--not to mention some amazing avant-pop from Sacramento's Pregnant, who're so good I put them here twice.
