It's weird, but the more I hear the Drums, the more I kinda start to think they might really be as good as the mainstream indie press would like us all to think they are. Here they take on the Supremes, and it, like, totally is good. Totally.

best thing ever: coolrunnings cover talking heads

I don't think I'm using any hyperbole when I say that Talking Heads' "Road to Nowhere" is lowkey one of the most beautiful pop songs of all time. COOLRUNNINGS, a band I'm mostly familiar with for their name, went and did something that some are suggesting indicates another cinematic touchstone: the 1989 kiddy horror-comedy Little Monsters, co-starring none other than Fred Savage and the Guru Mandel. It's a pretty faithful cover, mostly turning up the swing on the drum machine a little bit and replacing that ethereal, otherworldy accordian with some achy Casio strings. Whether the reference was intended or not, this one holds a special place in my heart, a frequent fixture on the endless KTLA 5 Weekend Film Festivals of my childhood. Best Thing Ever: Luke Temple Covers "Doctor Robert"

This week's edition of IGIF's "Thursdays and Covers" feature contained this overlooked gem, Here We Go Magic's Luke Temple doing a languid glitched-out rendition of "Doctor Robert" for Mojo Magazine's early-aughts tribute to Revolver.



The most immediate reference would seem to be Karl Blau's so-weird-it-works Dance Positive, sharing that record's paring of lazy basement synths with clickity-clackity percussion and miscellaneous electronic gurgles filling in the negative space. It's oddly compelling, and if nothing else brings renewed appreciation for the original melody's airtight brilliance.

Islands Cover Beck Not-So-But-Kinda-Rarity

As you may or may not know, Beck reissued his Mellow Gold-era K-realeased odds 'n ends collection One Foot in the Grave on Interscope yesterday.



To celebrate, Islands posted a cover of "Cyanide Breath Mint," off the aforementioned record, eschewing the original's fucked-up accoustic for a more full-throated... well, Islands song.

Best Thing Ever - LCD/Kanye Mashup/Cover Madness

So recently Mason Proper came out of left-fucking-field and did this downright glorious cover/mashup/instant party of Kanye's already-pretty-awesome "Love Lockdown" and LCD Soundsystem's even-better "Get Innocuous."

I know, I know, half of everybody on Earth hated 808's and Heartbreak, but the loping minimalist bass pulse of "Lockdown" becomes twice as catchy backed by "Innocuous'" driving motorik beat, and the ever-divisive Auto-Tune is wonderfully absent.

And--you know, the singer can actually sing. A good thing for a pop song, generally.
