new music: weekend/young prisms split 7''

Awesome new split 7'' single from the homies at Transparent featuring two of San Francisco's finest pop outfits. Young Prisms have had a pretty decent touring presence throughout Cali this year. I was lucky enough to catch them at Tan Dollar's record release show a few months ago, where they delivered an unexpectedly gazey performance that delivered on the promise of their early material. Their side of the vinyl goes further in that direction with insistent drumming and pretty much everything else hazed/droned into oblivion. But it's Weekend, who I actually hadn't heard until now, that probably steal the show with "End Times". That bassline just will not leave me alone.

new music: Arches

So I've come back from the nation's biggest intercollegiate debate tournament in beautiful Berkeley, CA. Our status as debate terrorists continues to get bigger, as our completely nonsensical, intentionally rabble-rousing, and totally awesome argument took down some big fish and crushed some little nerds' dreams of going to the Tournament of Champions. Which is all you can really hope for.

Right: music.

Okay--just let me stop you right there. I know, this band sounds just like Real Estate and I know, they're also from New Jersey. But back when I was a kid, being associated with your scene's best and highest-profile band was a good thing.

Enter the Garden State's Arches, who you could think of as a vague halfway point between Real Estate and SF's Young Prisms, taking elegant, lazily tropical guitar-pop and giving it a more minimalist garage slant. If you're still reading by now, you already love this band, so here's the three mp3's I was able to get a hold of.

New Music: Young Prisms

Emerging from the same glorious West-coast city as Nodzzz, Thee Oh Sees, and Sic Alps comes Young Prisms, who will be releasing their self-titled EP on glorious East-Coast record label Mexican Summer next month.

Geographic proximity notwithstanding, Young Prisms find their particular niche in 60's psychedelia of their San Francisco jam-band forefathers, making them a standout amongst their more garage-rocking labelmates.
