Despite grave rumors, Calgary's Women continue to release bits of new material following in the wake of last year's incredible Public Strain LP. They've got a new song on a mostly great split EP from Faux Discx along with some very nice music from Cold Pumas, Fair Ohs, and (especially) Friendo. Here Women are in highest form, showcasing their intricate guitar work and taking it to full-on prog territory before a mournful fadeout. If "Bullfight" is the last we'll ever hear from the brothers Flegel, it's a fine outro.
Welcome back to Reasons I'm Cursed and Can Never Be Happy with I'm Into C.B.
On this week's episode, we take a look at a very distressing statement released by Flemish Eye concerning my favorite current indie rock band, Calgary's Women, and reflect on how I missed their show at the Echo two weeks ago for no goddamn reason.
With a heavy heart, we regret to say that the band Women is exhausted and are in need of a break from touring. They have experienced a lot of stress recently, and this culminated in a disastrous public conflict on Friday. Band members have been suffering from poor health, and are in near-exhaustion; as of today, all upcoming shows have been cancelled.
We feel that it's necessary to emphasize that this is a very difficult time for the band, and is not a trivial decision for a group that has spent as much time touring as they have. The band is a close-knit group of friends that have known each other since elementary school, and the personal health of these individuals forces this decision.
The band would appreciate some privacy as they sort things out and recover.
Chill on this sick video of Women playing "Eyesore" from their new LP live at the Levi's/Fader party at SXSW 2009. Also, Public Strain is so unbelievably sick, shit. I think I need to put up another song from it too. Peace out.
Chad VanGaalen-approved Calgary indie pop darlings Women made waves last year with their self-titled debut. Around that time, they played a tantalizingly-short but blistering show at NYC's Cake Shop during CMJ. Pitchfork.tv was there (apparently) and did us all a solid by posting the set up at Pitchfork Live.
"Group Transport Hall," one of their debut's hilights, is given the slow-burn swamp rock treatment we kinda half-knew it was capable of despite the LP version's paltry couple of verses. Enjoy:
