THE SEBASTOPOL MIXTAPE Vol. 11
It's been an awesome few weeks with the ride-or-die homies in town from the great white East, but with a level of real-world physical activity that precluded a lot of music snobbery. That said, the ol' stereo's been spinning a pretty eclectic mix of records lately, notably the predictably excellent Winter Review 2009 comp from the fine people over at Underwater Peoples, when I wasn't busy jamming the new Spoon record or, god help me, that Cap'n Jazz retrospective.
Also of note this week: the UK's Chalices of the Past give LCD's "Someone Great" the spacy 8-bit treatment, with surprisingly satisfying results.

New Music: Big Troubles
Another day, another band with Fluffy Lumbers in it.
Big Troubles, seen here featuring Samuel Franklin on drums backing the NJ duo of Ian Drennen and Alex Craig, play late-JAMC flavored jangle pop at earsplitting volumes. Here they are at the Cameo Gallery, care of the homie Ray Concepcion. Look for some legit releases on either Underwater Peoples or Olde English Spelling Bee.

New Frat Dad - Freak In Nature
So that dude Fluffy Lumbers is also in this band called Frat Dad, who you might have heard earlier this year on the homies Underwater Peoples' Summer Showcase comp.
Well, "Freak in Nature" is better than any of those songs. Lumbers' Samuel Franklin and fellow Ridgewood, NJ suburbanite James Benson trade call-and-response vocals over a murky psych-punk groove, and a chorus that would be a speaker-obliterator if it hadn't already obliterated whatever was used to record it.
