Now that I've cleared the air about that dude, I can move on to happier news. I haven't held it against the Drums that NME called them the "coolest band in New York," mostly because they specialize in popping impossibly shiny packets of pure joy into the world. On their recent Daytrotter session, though, they've kinda earned some mad props in my book by somehow turning out to be a tight and raucous little power-pop band. Don't believe me? This version of "Let's Go Surfing" kicks ass waaaay harder than you have ever expected that song to be able to kick ass. Drop the GarageBand drum loops guys, put the mic a little further away from the amp, the world needs to hear you like this more often.

The world's foxiest punk band took themselves a little road trip this March (while everyone in the world was at South by Southwest) to Rock Island, Illinois. Crammed into the "unassuming" (their words) Fututeappletree Studio Too, the Vivian Girls let loose some hushed thrash for the Daytrotter Sessions.



Throwing in a couple new songs along with cuts from their debut album, it's an eclectic set eschewing the squalling guitars and reverbed vocals of their records for a quieter, cleaner sound that showcases their gorgeous surf harmonies. Be sure to check out the haunting rendition of "Never See Me Again" from their first LP.

Full disclosure: today during the 15 minute cram sesh leading up to my Chemistry exam (shout out to Dr. Ashcroft), I bumped Ganglians' new Daytrotter Session though my tinny bullshit laptop speakers. It was tense times in the hallway: "What the fuck, could you turn that weird shit down? I'm trying to study." "Dude wtf are you listening to?" "Maan what is that wack shit?"



So, as usual, I had to suffer in silence until I could find sufficient refuge from the Real World normals and, well, fucking idiot radio rap fans. Whatever. They sound way better in my bedroom through my speakers anyway. And how's that for charity? They treated us to a couple of LP tracks, an EP cut, and an unreleased tune by the name of "My House," which totally kills.

Recently, LA's most dynamic duo No Age stopped by Rock Island studios to record a session of unreleased songs for the venerable Daytrotter Sessions.



The set is pretty standard Losing Feeling era stuff, with classic punk riffage paired with Randy Randall's punishing drums and ever-improving vocals. Fans will especially want to check out 2nd track "Hard Trash," which features the O.G. backing track to "You're a Target."

Best Thing Ever: Daniel Johnston Live on the Daytrotter Sessions

When I was but a lad of 14, my flirtation with competitive debate brought me to the seething swampy blast-furnace that is Austin, Texas during the summer months. Dragging my rapidly decaying self up a unbleached Congress Ave. with a tub of research, I came upon this weird--like--frog-thing. Stenciled on the side of a building, looming large over my pre-growth-spurt frame, the "Hi, how are you?" frog-thing haunted me for several years, and it wasn't until my senior year of high school that I discovered the broken, gloriously devastating pop of Daniel Johnston.



About him, enough has been said. So, the reason for this rant: our friends at Daytrotter recently posted a session recorded in Austin during this year's SXSW, featuring Brooklyn's Hymns as his backing band.
