No real story behind this one, just what I've had on heavy rotation since the new semester of Cal State Fuckertown has started. It has the alternate single-version of the Velvets' "All Tomorrow's Parties," as well as B-sides and rarities from the Wedding Present, the Feelies, and Sun City Girls. It's been a slow week for music consumption, mostly due to an excess of crap coming out this week despite really none of it being in any way compelling ("Walkabout" is boring, period).

So, yeah, Beck continues on his quest to pound out The Velvet Underground and Nico a week at a time.

I've been going through a bit of a Velvets kick lately, and it's all the VU comparisons that led me to Baltimore sextet Lo Moda. With pounding rhythms, scratchy guitars, and a deadpan vocal delivery, it's easy to see where the comparison comes from.



"C.O.N.T.R.O.L. (Catch You Later)" is my favorite track off their new Replica Watches LP, out now on Creative Capitalism.

The 2nd installment in Beck's increasingly awesome Record Club is the next track from the seminal The Velvet Underground and Nico, the swaggering "I'm Waiting for the Man."

So that Beck Hansen guy has been tinkering with his web site recently, and the first new feature to appear is a totally awesome idea he's calling the Record Club.

"An informal meeting of various people to record an album in a day. An album will be chosen to be reinterpreted and used as a framework. Nothing rehearsed or arranged ahead of time. A track will be uploaded once a week on beck.com as well as through the web sites of those involved with the project."

To start things off on an appropriately sacrilegious note, Beck and some friends--including legendary producer Nigel Godrich and an Icelandic guy named Thorunn Magnusdottir--decided to take on the timeless The Velvet Underground and Nico.
